‘Radio City’ Bead Painting – Finished!

Radio City Music Hall NYC beaded painting bead embroidery glass seed beads acrylic

'Radio City'. Bead embroidery on painted canvas. 30" x 40" (76cm x 102cm).

Last week, I finally finished my beaded Radio City Music Hall painting! This piece consists of glass seed beads and speaker grill fabric stitched to an acrylic-painted canvas. (You can view an enlarged photo on Flickr.) I have worked on this off and on since October, so I feel it’s a real accomplishment to finally have it completed and hanging on my wall. Over the next few weeks, I will be working on a couple of smaller beadwork projects while I think about the subject of my next big painting…  I’ll also be busy packing and getting ready to move back to Boston… New beading adventures await! 😀

Speak Grill Fabric City

Long time, no post! Things have been pretty crazy the past couple of weeks. As I said before, I am planning to move back to Boston in September, so I have been sorting through everything, getting rid of unwanted items, and selling things on eBay, etc… In between all of that, I have been doing a little painting! Check it out:

Semi-painted 40" x 30" canvas for my beaded Radio City Music Hall.

First, I painted my 30″ x 40″ canvas black, then I cut out & stitched some speaker grill fabric to the canvas. This was rather difficult to do as this kind of fabric frays easily. Somehow I managed to cut out some shapes that resemble the buildings which surround my beaded Radio City Music Hall! After I stitched them to the canvas, I painted the edges to soften them up a bit.

Then, using a new palette knife and heavy body acrylics, I painted yellow windows and doors just below the theatre. I have never used a knife before, and I will say that I am pleased with the results so far. I have a bit more to paint on the canvas before I stitch all the beadwork into place, but so far, I think it’s lookin pretty good! We’ll see what happens next! 😀

Great Glimpse of Thunder at CAM

I can’t blog enough about Coos Art Museum‘s, Thunder at CAM. For those of you who are new readers, this is a BIG exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art in Coos Bay, Oregon. My beaded Buell X-1 Lightning will be shown at this exhibit through July 23, 2011. Here’s a quick pic I pulled off of the museum’s website. Can you find my beaded bike? 😀

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, I highly recommend taking a road trip to  check out this exhibition! You can see a short video clip featuring some of the antique bikes at the show HERE. Also, check out the museum’s virtual gallery to view all accepted artworks & award winners!

Other exciting news this week: I’ve decided to move back to Boston in September! It may seem spontaneous, but I’ve actually been putting off moving for over a year now. I need to be back in town since I’ve been spending so much time in Harvard Square lately.. So, I found a bigger space in Brighton where I should be able to do my beadwork more efficiently. So, over the next month, I’ll be busy assembling my beaded Radio City Music Hall, organizing my beads & art supplies, and packing up my belongings. It will be a big change to move back into the city- one that is long overdue! :O

4th Beaded Taxi Cab & New Website!

A couple of days ago, I completed the bead embroidery for my 4th beaded NYC taxi cab. I used a number of larger seed beads for this one, including Magatamas, and Czech crystal rounds. This car really sparkles in traffic! Finally, I think all the beaded components for my Radio City Music Hall painting are complete. Next, I need to stitch them altogether, and start working on a painted canvas! I still have quite a bit of work to do! :O

Also, I am thrilled to announce that I now have a new website! I feel very accomplished because I redesigned this site myself using iWeb. I think this one shares a  little more information about me, as well as more photos of my beadwork! I hope you’ll stop by and take a peek:  https://thelonebeader.com/

Thank you for your interest! 🙂

Larger Taxi, Larger Beads

Here’s a quick pic of the 4th beaded taxi cab I’ve been working on. This one is only slightly larger than the last, but it seems much larger! I am using larger beads, too! Magatamas, size 8’s, size 6’s, bugles, and some bigger black & gold Czech glass beads. (Currently, there are over 30 different types of seed beads out on my beading mat!) Because these large beads are heavier, I am stitching through them several times. This process takes a bit longer, but it ensures that the beads will be held in place properly. How do you think this taxi cab will look speeding down a beaded NYC street? 😀

Glimpse of a Beader’s Work Table

Today, UPS delivered my new digital camera! It’s a pink  Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W530 with 14.1 megapixels. I got it for free with my Sony Rewards points! I would actually like a much better camera – I’m slowly working my up to one, I guess. The camera I had been using for the past 4 years is another Sony Cyber-shot with only 7.2MP. I’m hoping my new one will help me take slightly better photos for my blog and Etsy shop. Here is the first photo I took:

Current state of my work table.. :O

As you can see, it’s my messy kitchen beading table! I’m currently working on my 4th beaded taxi cab which will be part of my Radio City Music Hall bead-painting. This one measures 17″ long by 5″ tall – just a bit bigger than the last. It is also made from 11 layers of felt – a lot to stitch through! I will take a close-up shot when I get a little more beadwork done…  😀

Also, just a quick reminder that tomorrow, Friday, May 20, 2011, is the opening reception for Cambridge Art Association’s Northeast Prize Show. This event takes place in both CAA galleries from 5:30pm – 7:30pm in Cambridge, MA – just over the bridge from Boston and a short walk from Harvard Square. If you plan to attend, look for my bead-painting at University Place Gallery! Please CLICK HERE for more details. Hope to see you there! 😀
