Huichol Bead Art of Mexico

Dear friends, last month I traveled to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. This was my 3rd visit to the country. For those who have never had the opportunity to go to Mexico, I highly recommend visiting the Yucatan peninsula. This area is full of nature, handcrafted art, adventure, fish tacos, relaxation, and fun in the sun. For those who haven’t been there, I thought I would share a few photos of some beautiful beaded artwork I discovered along the way.

On my last night in Mexico, I visited Tierra Huichol, a gorgeous shop on 5th Avenue. This shop carries colorful hand beaded artwork made by indigenous Huichol (pronounced Wee-Chol) artists from the Pacific coast states of Jalisco and Nayarit. I had the opportunity to speak with the shop owner, Carlos, and he told me a little about the craft.

The Huichol people use mainly Czech glass seed beads because Japanese seed beads are just too perfect. First, an animal figure is covered with beeswax, then tiny glass beads are imbedded into the wax one by one to create these amazing designs. One of the main concerns is that over time, the wax may harden and some beads may fall off. I was told they are in search of a manmade material (similar to beeswax) which they can use to help reduce bead loss.

I think the most impressive thing about this art form is that the artist does not use a  drawing or outline to follow. They simply use their incredible artistic vision and creativity to create one of a kind pieces.

I was given the chart above to learn about all of the symbols which can be found in the artwork. Then I shopped around for awhile, and I found a small beaded gourd to purchase. This piece features images of the Peyote flower and the Deer.

The next time you visit Mexico, look for Huichol bead art in small tourist shops and at the airport. These artworks are affordable and easy to pack in your suitcase, so find one you would like to bring home. Your purchase will help support the culture and livelihood of a very gifted group of artists! 🙂

Custom Beaded Choodle Pendant

Dear friends, thanks to this month’s feature in AKC Family Dog Magazine, my Etsy shop has been keeping me busy! Check out the latest custom beaded dog pin I have created:

It’s a beaded Choodle (Chi-Poo) – or Chihuahua Poodle mix in blonde and apricot colors. This designer dog brooch was created by stitching tiny glass seed beads to felt 2-3 at a time. I have also added a tiny sterling silver heart charm on his collar. Here you can see how this piece looks as a pendant:

And, here is the photo my customer sent for inspiration. Ozzy the Choodle looks just like my beaded pin.. or perhaps it it’s the other way around? What do you think? 😉

Progress of a Beaded House, Yard, and Tree

Dear friends, I have been making a little progress on my beaded house portrait. Check it out..

First, I have stitched Miyuki Tila and half-Tila beads for the sidewalk and the wall near the driveway. Then, I created a tiny mailbox and yard light by stringing beads onto eye pins and attaching them at the back of the piece. I used Preciosa rose montee rhinestones for the yard light. It really sparkles!

Next, I began working on the large tree. Tiny glass seed beads make it look larger than it really is!

In the photo above, I began beading the grass. Stitching in several directions, I used 4 different shades of green for visual interest.

When I finished the lawn, I peyote-stitched tiny bits of greenery around the yard light. And, I added bead -embroidered shrubs or yews along the front of the house.. How do you think it looks so far?

For those who have just stumbled upon this post, this portrait has been commissioned as a gift for mother of the bride. This is her mother’s childhood home. This house still stands in Southeastern Ohio. Please check my Facebook or Instagram pages for more updates. Thanks for looking! 🙂

Constructing a Beaded House Portrait

Dear friends, these days, I am working on a special commission – a bead-embroidered house portrait!

First, I completed a sketch which I used to create a paper template. I used the template to create several different felt shapes of the house. I layered the felt cutouts and stitched them together.

I began beading the garage and windows using size 15 seed beads and Miyuki Tila beads. I am using several browns and grays so far.

Above, you can see that I finished beading the rest of the house. And, below, I have layered some seed beads over the house to create visual interest (although I don’t think the camera can pick up this detail).

I have also begun to work on the yard. I stitched half-Tila beads along the wall next to the driveway, as well as up the stairs. How do you think it looks so far? Please check my Facebook and Instagram pages for more updates. Thanks for your interest in my beadwork! 🙂
