>Media Mix Opening Reception

>

Friday night, I went to the opening reception for Media Mix at the South Shore Art Center, and had a fantastic time. It was a lovely evening for the opening reception and many people in Cohasset, MA were out and about. I was surprised at how many people showed up – the entire gallery space was packed! The juror, Gretchen Keyworth, also attended. There was food, beer, wine, live music, and awards! Here are some photos:

This national juried art exhibition features works of art that offer “distinctive imaginative imagery using 2 or more media” and artists in the show hail from 14 different states. Overall, it seemed that my ‘
Time Traveler Trilogy‘ was very well-received at this exhibition. Many people were interested in my beadwork, wanted to meet me or introduced me to other people. I was asked quite a few questions about how I create my beaded paintings. I was complimented on my approach to art (very encouraging)! A few people also said they had seen my beaded fire truck at the Duxbury Art Association Winter Juried Show! The entire evening was just wonderful. Please check my Flickr for more pics. And, for more info regarding Media Mix, please check the South Shore Art Center‘s website or my Exhibits page. Thanks for your interest! 🙂

>Time Traveler – A Beaded Trilogy

>

Thanks to everyone for your interest in my beadwork, and for following my blog! This week has been big for me. It marks the completion of my Time Traveler pieces. This is a pop art series of mixed media works featuring a beaded DeLorean Time Machine. My inspiration came from the 1985 film Back to the Future. Here is the trilogy in its entirety – which piece is your favourite?

I worked on these 3 pieces almost exclusively for the past 5 months, so it feels like quite an accomplishment to be finally finished! Of course, I am never really finished. I have spent the past couple of days taking photos of my beadwork, and adding them to several websites including TheLoneBeader.com, Facebook, Myspace, and Squidoo.

So, what will become of this series? A DeLorean owner on Twitter already asked me if these pieces would be available for sale at The Lone Beader’s Gallery Shop on Etsy. He wanted to let some other DeLorean owners know about it. I would love to show them altogether in an art exhibit before they are sold to a private collector. However, in the meantime, if someone is interested, the price is available on request. I think each piece can stand on its own, but it would make more sense (to me) to display them altogether. So, I’m not sure if I should offer them only as a set or also as separate works. I guess I will have to think about that…What do you think?? Until I decide, these works will be hanging on the wall in my studio! 😀

Today, I am proud to announce that I have finally finished my series of paintings featuring my beaded DeLorean time machine! My beaded Einstein has returned from time-traveling… except he is not beaded! He is merely a paper photograph – like a memory of his past existence. Is this because he has changed the past? Or maybe Einstein has seen the future, and when he returns everything is history… I suppose it is up to you to decide…
Regardless, this painting also depicts the fact that cars of the past had a terrible emissions problem. Hopefully, American cars of the future will run cleaner and more efficiently on alternative fuels. But, I don’t think they will have the kind of horsepower required to travel through time! It seems to me, that will be a thing of the past. 😉

Bead embroidery on 16″ x 20″ painting. Part 2 of 3.

Last night, I worked on my second painting in my beaded Back to the Future trilogy, and this time I think I finished it! I stitched my antique clock parts onto the canvas, and then I painted over them with acrylics! It really wasn’t my intention to do that, but after I stitched them on, I realized I wasn’t done painting. I think I really like this effect. It makes the clock parts actually appear to be part of the painting! 😀

Next, I stitched my beaded DeLorean time machine to my canvas. It is a heavy piece, but my idea still works. It is stitched on at each end of the car, and the center is supported by nothing! But, the beadwork does not collapse because there is a sturdy metal fabric stitched to the back. Here is a side view of my canvas:

When the piece is hanging on the wall, the DeLorean bead art ‘pops’ out of the canvas by 3″!! Einstein is traveling through time directly toward the viewer! My only concern with this design is the weight of the beadwork and the long term affect it will have on the stretched canvas. So, I plan to add 2 extra small screw eyes to the back of the wooden frame. Then, I will throw in a few more stitches and actually stitch to the hardware. This will pull the piece back to the frame, and will hopefully provide some sort of strain relief or ‘safety’… So, even though I am finished with my painting, I am still not finished! Ah well…next, I will continue working on the 3rd and final part of this piece
