Visit a Women’s Beading Cooperative in Mexico

Dear friends, I had such an exciting trip to Mexico this year. For two weeks, I traveled off the beaten path to do some swimming in a freshwater lagoon, birdwatching, kayaking, snorkeling, and exploring yet another Mayan ruin site deep in the Jungle. But I also visited some ‘touristy’ destinations. If you have never taken the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, you are in for a trip. Is is so much fun, and its a quick ride so there’s little chance of getting seasick. Most tourists probably never leave el Centro when they visit, or they are probably on a catamaran trip which also doesn’t allow for much exploration. But if you are a little more adventurous, jump in a taxi and explore the island. Yes, you can also rent a golf cart for the day, but I have found that a taxi is much cheaper and quicker if you are only headed to a few places.

On this trip, I stopped in to visit the Women’s Beading Cooperative on the island. These women make beautiful beaded jewelry – necklaces, earrings, bracelets, belts, and more. Most items are made by weaving tiny glass seed beads with nylon thread. Each piece is marked with the artisan’s name. When you purchase something, that artist receives 80% and the remainder is used for supplies. They also accept donations. I had brought over 1-lb. of Japanese size 15 seed beads as well as some Czech glass drop beads. Size 15 beads are rare in Mexico, so they were very happy to receive them! If you have the chance to visit this little shop, please do so, as you will be supporting the local community. These women work hard at creating some very unique jewelry!

At the end of the day, my companion and I went to Punta Sur. It is the southernmost tip of the island and it was one of my favorite places to visit. It had been very hot inland, so it was nice to catch some seabreeze here! At first, we thought there wasn’t much to explore here except Ixchel Temple and a sculpture garden. But as we made our way toward the tip of the island, we noticed that there were cliffside walking paths near the water’s edge which went in both directions. These paths are amazing and a little adventurous!

Once again, Mexico continues to surprise me. I already can’t wait to return! 🙂

Felt Corgi Dogs Ready to Bead!

This weekend, I prepared some felt Corgi shapes for an bead embroidery workshop. Cutting out the felt for my little dogs is a lot of work in itself! And, after cutting out the pieces, I stitch them all together & attach tiny glass eyes and noses. I think that preparing the felt foundations ahead of time will make it easier for beginning beaders..

If you are interested in making a beaded Corgi pin or pendant, there are still a few spots left. This one-time workshop is scheduled to take place on Sunday January 27 from 10am-3pm. Please check Boston Bead Company’s website  for details! Thanks for your interest! 😀

My First Beading Class!

Yesterday’s bead embroidery workshop at Boston Bead Company was great! I thought I would be nervous, (since the class sold out AND it was my first time teaching) but I really wasn’t nervous at all. I came prepared with felt poodle forms for everyone to bead, as well as several examples which were partially beaded to show each section as we worked. The shop manager (who also took the class) said my examples helped a lot!

For me, it was interesting to see the differences in everyone’s skill level and their approach to learning. One student had already taken several classes from some of my fav. bead artists. One was taking notes as I explained things to her, and one was determined to finish her piece no matter what! Overall it was a very good experience. Two of my students actually finished their pieces within the allotted time, and the others left feeling inspired to keep beading! I have a feeling there will be more bead embroidery classes in the future:)

New Bead Embroidery Workshop in Cambridge, MA!

Thursday night’s reception at Boston Bead Company was fun! What a wonderful opportunity to show some of my beadwork in Harvard Square. I also had the chance to talk about my creative process to those who were interested and perhaps new to bead embroidery. Here’s a quick pic of Carson Eddy, the shop owner, and I.. We had a great time checking out all of the gorgeous seed beads currently in stock for the Fall Seed Bead Trunk Show!

After the reception, I went out with friends sporting my latest micro-beaded poodle necklace. This piece is so much fun to wear & it really commands attention. Perhaps I should make more beaded dog collars! 😀

Weekend Bead Shopper: Freshwater Pearls

Recently, I received a package full of beads from the Philippines: freshwater pearls! These beads were sent to me courtesy of beadsandfindings.net. I absolutely love the unique colors, texture, and shapes! I can’t wait to incorporate them into one of my beaded paintings! 😀

I will say that I was very impressed with this online bead shop’s customer service, too. I had wanted to order some Red Coral Chili Beads, but they informed me that they could not ship them to me because their importation is banned in the USA. I had forgotten about that fact, and was a bit surprised to see that my FedEx package had actually been sliced open and inspected by U.S. Customs, resealed with fancy U.S. Fish & Wildlife tape! I guess I’ll have to travel to the Philippines to purchase the beads I want.. Someday! 😉

Weekend Bead Shopper: Russian Dolls

Recently, BeadCrafty.com sent me some shiny new beads! Check out these cute hand-painted  porcelain Russian doll beads! These measure 26mm – a bit larger than most beads I use, but I absolutely love them, especially since I visited Russia last year. What do you think I should I make with them? 😀

If you have not shopped BeadCrafty.com, I will say that they offer a wonderful assortment beads of all types, their customer service is outstanding, and shipment from the UK is very fast. I’m sure I will return to order more Russian Dolls in the future:)
