Beaded Spring Chicken

beaded wyandotte rooster hen painting etsy beadwork bead embroidery art

This week, I finished a new commissioned painting featuring  a beaded Wyandotte chicken! This piece consists of extreme bead embroidery stitched to a painted canvas. I used Czech & Japanese glass seed beads of all sizes. I also used Magatamas and Czech dagger beads. This bird’s feathers really move when you touch them! This piece is a small work measuring just 8″ x 8″..  My next project will be a custom beaded chicken pin.. Who knew chickens were so popular? :)

My First Art Festival!

I survived my first art at festival! This weekend, I had a booth at Festival By The Sea in Manchester, MA. It was a wonderful experience. Special thanks to friends who helped set up my tent and hang a few paintings before the show started – there is no way I could have done everything myself! :O

My set-up was pretty basic. I had a couple of tables for jewelry and small paintings, 2 hanging pegboards for larger paintings, a bust form to display my pet pins, a literature rack for beading kits, and 4 easels for more bead paintings. I was a bit nervous about having easels there because they take up quite a bit of space, and they can be a hazard in the wind. I came prepared with 20-lb sandbags & concrete blocks just in case..

Luckily, the weather cooperated. It turned out to be the perfect day for an art festival. I made a few sales, my tent was always full of people, and Cape Ann TV did an interview with me! Since this was my first show ever, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the response was very positive! Nearly everyone who visited my booth said they had never seen anything like my work before. One woman even said that this type of show is much too small for my work – she insisted that I need to show my work in a gallery in NYC (hopefully someday!).. Children of all ages seemed to enjoy my beadwork, too – they could relate to the subjects right away, and many asked me questions! Seeing people smile when they viewed my pieces made me very happy:)

Even though it was a lot of work, doing this festival was a positive experience. I think I may have to start doing more shows in the future! :D

New Bead Painting in Progress!

I have been very busy lately! Recently, I started working on a new bead painting. This piece will be a city scene inspired by a photo I took while visiting Moscow.

First, I enlarged one of the photos I took and cut out the image of St. Basil’s Cathedral. I used it as a template to create felt shapes which outline the architecture of the building. Then, I cut out more shapes, and stitched them together, creating a felt foundation for my subject (shown below).

Next, I began stitching beads to the felt.. So far, I am using mostly gray and white beads for this piece. Some are Czech or Japanese seed beads, some are vintage beads, and some are gemstones (such as Ocean Jasper)..

I plan to use many different types of beads for visual interest and to represent the beauty of the cathedral itself.

So far, I have completed 2 sections of this piece, with the exception of the spires which I will work on at a later date. How does it look? :D

Due to the size and complexity of this subject, I think its safe to say I will be beading for awhile.. Please follow my Facebook page for the latest updates. Thanks for your interest in my beadwork!

Majestic Bead Painting Finished!!

Well, it took me a few months, but I finally finished my beaded painting! This piece is entitled Majestic, named after the Boston theatre of the same name. Perhaps you have walked past this alley many times without noticing it..

At Cambridge Art Association’s 11th National Prize Show!

Finally, a quick pic from Friday night’s reception at the Cambridge Art Association’s 11th National Prize Show! What a fantastic event and what an honor it is to be a part of the show! :D

Also, for the first time, the Cambridge Art Association allowed artists to take out an advertisement in their full-color exhibition booklet. All proceeds support the Cambridge Art Association, so I decided to take advantage of the opportunity.  I designed my own ad! How does it look? :D
